Materials research: PhD thesis successfully defended

Last week, Matthias Rettl successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled “Optimization of Toughness in Materials with Propagating and Reinitiating Cracks”.

Rettl examined how the targeted optimization of structures, such as the shape of holes in homogeneous 2D plates, can significantly increase the toughness of materials. With the help of simulation models and a developed optimization algorithm, a structure could be designed that achieves a toughness more than 4.5 times higher than that of the base material.

The jury recognized this scientific achievement as an innovative contribution to materials research. Congratulations!
