The award went to Gruber for his work on the worldwide first “artificial eye” for polymer production processes. This unique system was designed for a project at the Polymer Competence Center Leoben GmbH (PCCL), in cooperation with Montanuniversität Leoben. Starting from production, the eye makes rapid, automatic, and reproducible measurements of components’ surface imperfections and shine aspects. Through human perception the standard of surface examination which the eye is capable of, has been unattainable.
After many awards, including the Fast Forward Award, the Innovation Award, and the Houska-Prize of the B&C-Foundation, the "Austria'14"-Award "Austrian of the Year" is a further confirmation of the immense potential of this unique development. “The system opens a door for new possibilities in the field of surface inspection. This prise shows immense recognition of my work”, states Gruber.
