Sustainable Materials

International Master (EN)

Become an Engineer for Sustainably Produced Materials

Imagine a world where materials are not only high-performing but also sustainable. A world where, as an engineer, you push the boundaries of what is possible and actively contribute to a resource-efficient future. The international Master's programme Sustainable Materials (SUMA) at Montanuniversität Leoben offers precisely this: a first-class education that integrates technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability.

Here, you will develop sustainable materials, optimise recycling processes, and shape the raw materials industry of the future. Through practice-oriented teaching, international collaborations, and a strong industrial network, you will prepare for a career that truly makes a difference.

What to expect from the study programme?

Your studies will take you on an exciting journey through cutting-edge materials science and sustainable technologies. Over the course of four semesters (120 ECTS), you will explore the field of materials engineering, study at two leading European universities, and complete an industry placement.

Your curriculum is structured around three dynamic focus areas:

  • Technical Excellence (60 ECTS)
You will develop new materials, test recycling methods, and explore innovative production processes.

  • Innovation & Entrepreneurship (30 ECTS)
Sustainability requires pioneers! You will cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset and learn how to transform groundbreaking ideas into market-ready solutions.

  • Practical Experience & Research (30 ECTS)
Through an industry placement (6 ECTS) and your Master’s thesis (24 ECTS), you will apply your knowledge directly. You will work on real-world industrial challenges, connect with leading companies, and develop forward-thinking strategies.

What are your career opportunities?

With a Double-Master’s degree in Sustainable Materials, a wealth of career opportunities will be open to you. You will become a highly sought-after expert in one of the most promising fields of the future, an area where sustainable innovations are reshaping entire industries.

Your expertise will be in demand across high-tech industries, research institutions, and consultancy firms:

  • Industry & Engineering
Develop advanced high-performance materials, revolutionise production processes, or optimise recycling in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, construction, or electronics.

  • Research & Development
Become part of an international research team and drive sustainable material innovations. Contribute to the next major breakthrough in materials science.

  • Sustainability & Resource Management
Develop strategies to help businesses utilise raw materials more intelligently, close material loops, and reduce environmental impacts.

  • Policy & Consultancy
Use your expertise to influence decision-making at national and international levels, setting new standards for sustainable material management.

Your career does not begin after graduation, it starts here! With a unique combination of technical expertise, entrepreneurial vision, and an international network, you will be well-equipped to make a lasting impact on the world of materials.
