Faster, Further, Higher & More Sustainable
Efficient aircraft turbines, dirt-repellent sports shoes, foldable displays or biocompatible implants in medicine – innovative products can only be realised with the help of modern materials. Whether the service life of products is to be increased or energy efficiency is to be improved, as a materials scientist you will find a way to solve the challenges of the future with your knowledge of materials and their processing.
It comes as no surprise that innovation and the development of materials go hand in hand! Intelligent new materials ensure the reduction of emissions in traffic, drive electromobility forward and thus also counteract climate change. It is not uncommon for new materials to be inspired by nature: In order to make materials stronger and more damage-tolerant, researchers in Leoben have developed new structures based on wood, bones or shells.
The right programme for you?
Do you like being inspired by nature, solving problems and are you interested in technology? Then you are already on the right track. If you are curious and creative to boot, with a spirit of discovery, then the study of materials science and technology is right for you! Do you think you’re ready to dive into the world of materials?
What can you expect in the Materials Science and Technology programme?
Before you dive into the world of materials, you will learn the basics in the first four semesters. Different materials such as metals, ceramics and plastics are examined more closely during your studies, whether it be in materials technology or materials testing. You can apply your newly acquired knowledge and learn to develop technical and materials science solutions for challenges and problems in the Do-it Labs. Depending on your interests, you can either go in depth down to the atoms or let off steam in plastics technology across the entire process chain from raw materials to processing to the product.
Major in European School of Materials (EEIGM)
Montanuniversität Leoben is part of the European School of Materials, a program led by the French engineering school EEIGM (École Européenne d'Ingénieurs en Génie des Matériaux) at the University of Lorraine (Nancy). Students can gain international experience by studying for four semesters at Montanuniversität Leoben and then spending an additional three semesters in Nancy to deepen their specialized knowledge.
After completing your bachelor's degree, you can choose from three possible master's degree programmes. In the master's programme in materials science, you will learn how to develop lightweight and energy-saving materials for tomorrow.
If you choose Polymer Engineering, depending on your interests, you can either develop polymer materials, research innovative production techniques, design components or improve lightweight construction.
In Advanced Materials Science and Engineering (AMASE) you will study materials science and engineering both at the Montanuniversität Leoben and at one of six partner universities in Europe.
What career opportunities are available to you after graduation?
As a graduate of the Montanuniversität Leoben, you will develop and realise materials or products for the challenges of tomorrow. Be it light and energy-saving materials for the automotive industry and aviation, for pollutant-free energy conversion and storage, for flexible electronics and communication technology (keyword: 5-G technology) or for 3D-printed bio-implants: There are no limits to your research drive and pioneering spirit!
