Scrap is Worth its Weight in Gold

Have you drunk from a can or ridden a bike today? Welcome to the world of metallurgy! Granted, the metal in these examples is something hands on. But even your toothbrush has to do with metallurgy, because no product goes through the manufacturing process without coming into contact with metal: on machines in the production processes, for instance. That is why metallurgy is present in EVERY area of your everyday life. That means it is also found in environmental protection, because in order to conserve resources and save energy, scrap and used metals are recycled into new products.

The right programme for you?

Imagine 1,500° C liquid pig iron coming out of the blast furnace and becoming YOUR high-tech product. Does that sound good? As a metallurgist, you are bursting with creativity – in the truest sense of the word. You design products and develop innovative concepts to make production processes both environmentally friendly and economical. If you are enthusiastic about technology and natural sciences and enjoy analytical and interdisciplinary thinking, you are ready to study metal cycles at the Montanuniversität Leoben.

What can you expect in the Metallurgy and Metal Recycling programme?

It all starts with learning the basics in the first three semesters. Then it gets metallurgical: You’ll deal with the extraction, processing and shaping of metallic materials. Business administration, production and materials technology open up a wide range of perspectives on processes and procedures for the production of steel, aluminium, copper and precious metals. Neither electromobility nor the energy transition and digitalisation can be implemented without these materials.

In foundry science, you will learn everything about the casting processes that are important for high-tech industries such as aerospace. In forming technology, you’ll learn how to roll, bend, forge or print metals. And what would the world of metallurgy be without digitalisation? You'll learn how to simulate models and processes for more environmentally friendly industrial processes in the simulation specialisation. The broad range of business management training in combination with the basics of labour, social and environmental law and language courses round off the training.

What career opportunities are available to you after graduation?

As a Montanuniversität Leoben metallurgist, you are ideally prepared for the management of metal extraction and processing plants as well as the research and development of new processes and products. Your future tasks will also include the planning and worldwide commissioning of new production facilities in order to design them in a more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient way.
